Panamint City 10.31.09 & 11.1.09 : We backpacked to Panamint City on 10/31/09, which was about 6 miles with 4000' gain - it took us 5 hours due to the struggle through the jungle for the first couple of miles. We were booked into the Hippie Cabin (Overflow Cabin) by the Mayor of Panamint City because the Hilton and the Castle were fully occupied. The Hippie Cabin was great - running water in the sink. We explored Panamint City on Saturday afternoon and in the evening, we joined the occupants of the Hilton around the campfire. On Sunday (November 1st), we checked out more Panamint City sites before backpacking out. The trek out went pretty fast because we didn't try to keep our feet dry - 2 hours and 45 minutes to hike out. A nice relaxing Halloween Weekend. Let's hope Surprise Canyon is never open to vehicle traffic again because it's a special place that needs to be protected.

Joshua Tree NP - Cottonwood Springs to Lost Palms Oasis, Victory Palms, and Mastadon Peak 03.06.09 : A day hike from Cottonwood Springs in Joshua Tree National Park to Lost Palms Oasis and the on to Victory Palm. I then backtracked and when I got beck to Lost Palms I checked out a side canyon with more palms before heading out. On the way back to Cottonwood Springs from Lost Palms Oasis, I did the loop to Mastadon Peak. GPS says a total of 11.6 miles with 2500' elevation gain.

Big Horn Mountains (5894') and Meeks Mountain (6277') 2.14.09 : To short hikes to mountains in the Rattlesnake Canyon area northwest of Joshua Tree. The hike to the highpoint of the Big Horn Mountains was 5.5 miles round-trip with 800' elevation gain. The hike to Meeks Mountain was 3 miles round-trip with 900' elevation gain. However, it did take 20+ miles of driving on backcountry roads to get to and from the starting point of the hikes - mostly on the New Dixie Mine Road.

Skyline Trail 02.08.09 : A day hike up to 3700'(I stopped when I got into the clouds because it was wet and cold) on the Skyline Trail in Palm Springs. About 6 miles round-trip with 3100' elevation gain - pretty good for how sick I've been lately, but I think I'm finally getting better. Now let's hope I don't have Lyme Disease.

Murray Hill (2210'), Palm Springs, CA 01.24.09 : A hike to Murray Hill in Palm Springs via the Garstin, Wildhorse, and Clara Burgess Trails. About 7.5 miles round-trip with 2100' elevation gain. The hike took about 3.5 hours. I tried out a new lens for my camera - a Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm 1:2.8 Pancake Lens. It makes my camera really lightweight and seems to take nice pictures, but I don't have zoom with it.

Dry Bone Canyon and Leaning Rock in Death Valley : A couple of day hikes in Death Valley National Park. A day hike down Dry Bone Canyon and a day hike up to Leaning Rock in the Cottonwood Mountains. Both these hikes started along White Top Mountain Road. The hike into Dry Bone Canyon ended up being about 7 miles with 3000 feet gain and the hike to Leaning Rock was a nice and really easy 3 mile hike with 1500 feet gain.

Panamint Butte (6584') and Towne Peak (7280') from Towne Pass, Death Valley NP 10/07/07 : A day hike from Towne Pass to Towne Peak and then on to Panamint Butte and back out. Approximately 14.6 miles round-trip with close to 6000 feet elevation gain - a long day. The hike to Panamint Butte from Towne Pass (going over Towne Peak) included about 3900 feet elevation gain and the hike back to Towne Pass (going over Towne Peak) from Panamint Butte included about 2100 feet gain.

Nopah Mountain (6394') Feb. 17, 2007 : A wonderful day hike to the highpoint of the Nopah Range between Shoshone, California and Pahrump, Nevada. Nopah Mountain - the highpoint of the range is 6,394 feet above sea level. The way I went was about 11 miles round-trip with 4200 feet elevation gain Most of the elevation gain comes over the last 2 miles on the way up so it is very steep in places.

Martinez Mountain (6560+) in the Santa Rosas 12.02.06 : A long day hike to Martinez Mountain in the Santa Rosas Moutains. The area Martinez is in is part of the San Bernardino National Forest. It was a long hike - 18 miles round-trip with 4200 feet total gain. The route was part trail, cross-country with bushwacking, and part use trail. It took us 11 hours including our breaks, but we think we lost at least an hour when we went off route and bushwacked part of our way up.
