Horton Creek Trail 9.26.09 : The fall colors were pretty along the Horton Creek Trail. I picked up a bad cold and had not gotten any exercise in a week, so I decided I needed to go for a hike. I thought I could do the hike up to Horton Lakes and then on the Basin Mountain. I felt like crap by the time I got to the big Horton Lake and then called it a day at about 11,000'. Photos taken with my Olympus E-410 (I can't wait to get that new E-620 when it gets to be a year old and replaced by the E-630).

Red Slate Mountain (13123') 8.8.09 : An overnight backpacking trip with Cassandra, Craig, Eliza, Norma, Rick, and Robb. On Saturday we backpacked in to Big McGee Lake, dropped our packs, and then day hiked to Red Slate Mountain. After enjoying the view from the summit of Red Slate Mountain, we returned to camp. On Sunday it was a short backpack out to the trailhead. About 20 miles and 5800' elevation gain for the round trip per the GPS track uploaded to a TOPO map, with 13 miles and almost all of the elevation gain done on Saturday. Sunday it was almost all downhill and just 7 miles.

About 25 miles with 5000' elevation gain. Not much snow left, but what snow that was left was hell to deal with due to the warm weather as it's post-hole hell. I originally planned to do Joe Devel Peak, but I got down to the small Lake along Rock Creek this morning and found I had left my camera in my tent. I continued on a little ways up the hill toward Joe Devel, but my heart wasn't into slogging up the big mound of sand without being able to take pictures of the view from up top. I backtracked to camp to pick up the camera, but when I got to camp it was already 9:30 am; so I packed up and headed back toward Cottonwood Pass and did a side trip to Cirque Peak on the way out. I ended up hauling the full pack up Cirque, so I was tired by the time I got back to the trailhead. That was my first time with a 30 lb pack since last fall and it killed me.

I had been planning on giving Lone Pine Peak a try on 4/18/09, but I didn't like the conditions and it took me 3 hours to get to 9800', which equated to at least 8 hours for me to make it to Lone Pine Peak. After a lot of indecision, I decided I wasn't ready for a 13 or 14 hour day. I opted to head for Olancha Pass and Round Mountain on 4/18/09, which was still took me almost 7 hours to summit and 4 to get back down for an 11 hour day.

Mount Rixford (12887') 10.25.08 : A day hike to Mount Rixford from Onion Valley. A 13.5 mile hike with 5200' elevation gain. 6.5 hours from Onion Valley to the summit - pretty slow. A half hour spent on the summit and then about 4.5 hours return trip from the summit to Onion Valley, so about an 11.5 hour day including time on the summit. I took another 15 minute break just before I got back on the trail to refill my water, dump out my shoes, and put blister patches on my toes where I had hot spots. I never take long breaks - just a few minutes here and there to drink/eat/piss/take layers off or put them on - my pace is rather slow but fairly steady.

Onion Valley to Kearsarge Lakes 10/17/08 : I have to carry weight on my back most of the time when I hike for the next couple of months to get ready for a trip I'm planning; so I headed out on a backpacking trip over Kearsarge Pass. I wasn't sure which direction I would go once over the Pass, but I was thinking of going out to Vidette Meadows and then trying to climb West Vidette, or camping at Charlotte Lake and day hiking up toward Glen Pass, or the easiest option would be to camp at Kearsarge Lakes and climb Mount Rixford. When I put on the 32 pound pack in the morning and headed up toward Kearsarge Pass my body told me that I was going with the easiest option - Kearsarge Lakes with a day hike from there the next day. I got to Kearsarge Lakes pretty early, so I had a chance to play with my camera and find out how the circular polarizer I picked up would work. It was a beautiful day - warm with a slight breeze. At about 5:30 it started getting smoky and by 6:30 the smoke was heavy and there were ashes flying all over the place. I heard that the fire was not that far away down past Bullfrog Lake somewhere, but I couldn't see it. By 7 pm my eyes were stinging and I was coughing; so I packed up and headed back out because I didn't want to breath that awful air all night long - my lungs are not the best as it is; so they don't need to inhale smoke that thick for any length of time. Anyway, Kearsarge Lakes are beautiful and I carried weight on my back like I had intended to. It took me 4 hours to get to Kearsarge Lakes from Onion Valley and then 3 hours to backpack out from Kearsarge Lakes to Onion Valley; so a 7 hour, 13 mile, 3700' gain day.

It is so much harder for me to backpack than to day hike, but I need to be able to carry weight and backpack to get to the beautiful places I want to go; so the training continues. I now have to figure out where to go with my pack next weekend.

Middle Palisade Attempt 9.19.08-9.21.08 : Bruce, David, and I backpacked into Finger Lake on Friday, September 19th. We all started from the trailhead at different times - I started at 11:30 am, Bruce at 1:30 pm, and David didn't start until 7:30 pm; so he backpacked to Finger Lake in the dark. The wind blew like crazy all night and we had trouble getting going on our attempt to climb Middle Palisade on Sept 20th. The wind died and we finally got moving just before 8 am, but I was tired from hauling a heavy pack in the day before and overnight a mild case of altitude sickness had set in; so I was really struggling (more than my normal slow struggle). I finally told the guys to go on ahead without me and I would just hike up as high as I could but probably not summit. I hiked up to the top of the moraine in the middle of the glacier at about 13,000' (it took me close to 4 hours to there from Finger Lake - a long time). David had stopped there too - the lack of sleep got to him. Bruce hooked up with a solo climber and we watched them go up the Red & White Route - they made the summit - (way to go Bruce!). The route they took didn't have any snow or ice (the glacier did not need to be crossed) and was never over Class 3; so now I know a good route up for next year if conditions are similar (and when are conditions ever similar?). We got back to camp at Finger Lake early enough to hike out, but we decided to hang out another night to kick back and relax - a great trip. I learned that I'll never go 2.5 months without carrying a heavy pack again - Day hiking/climbing just doesn't keep me in shape for backpacking - it really would have helped if that pack didn't feel so heavy on the way in.

Freel Peak (10881') 8.19.08 : I had to go to Reno for a staff meeting, so I decided to hike up to Freel Peak near Lake Tahoe while I was up in the area. I was interested in Freel Peak because it's the highpoint of El Dorado County and I've been working on the doing the County highpoints. About 6 miles with 3000 feet of gain - the loose slope on the way up was tough. I should have gone up the startard route along the Tahoe Rim Trail from Anderson Pass and then it would have been a trail hike all the way up. The Tahoe Rim Trail doesn't show on the map, but it's there.

Dragon Peak (about 13000') 8.2.08 : A hike from Onion Valley to upper Golden Trout Lakes and then a scramble up to Dragon Peak from the Lakes. The GPS shows it as a 9.4 round-trip with almost 5000' gain due to all the ups and downs I added along the ridge - I made my way up the SE ridge more or less - I spent some time over on the north side of the ridge before crossing back over to the south side up near the summit. I believe most people go all the way up to the saddle/headwall at the end of the wide chute that you take from the upper lake and then they pick up a loose chute that brings you up the south side of Dragon, but I climbed out of the chute before the headwall and headed up the SE ridge more or less - I topped out on the ridge east of Dragon Peak and traversed over to near where the final crack is from there. On the way down I dropped down a number of times to look at alternative routes to take back down into the wide talus/boulder filled chute, but I ended up taking the same route down as I went up. It turned out to be a beautiful day with a nice soft breeze, so it was a perfect day for taking my time and playing with a used camera I picked up recently.

Day 1 took 7 hours to backpack to camp at 10,550'. Day 2 was a long day - it took me about 3.5 hours to get to near the Lyell/Maclure Saddle from camp and then I farted around looking for a good way for me to get up from there; so it took me a good 1.5 hours to get from the saddle to the top of Lyell and then another 2 hours to get back to camp from the summit of Lyell. After an hour spent packing up at camp I backpacked out. The backpack out from camp took 5 hours. So, about 12 hours of backpacking/hiking/climbing on day 2.

There's a use trail that starts out near the Tioga Pass entrance station to Yosemite and takes you up the hill as you get closer to the top the use trail becomes many use trails but they all lead to the top. Mount Tom (13652') via Horton Lakes 6.21.08 : A day hike to Mount Tom in the Eastern Sierra near Bishop, California. The flowers were out as well as the mosquitoes. My legs were tired from the start, so it turned out to be very slow going - a long 13 hour day for the 16 mile/5600' gain hike. The weather while I was out there was a combination of sun, clouds, light snow, light rain, and breezy at times.

I had planned to backpack into Horton Lakes and then try Mount Tom on Saturday and Basin Mountain on Sunday, but on Friday one of my old and sickly cats, Stinky, wasn't feeling good. I made an appointment with the Vet for Monday and decided to do a couple of day hikes over the weekend instead of a backpacking trip so I could check with with my son on Saturday night to see how Stinky was doing. When I got out to Bishop on Saturday night, I found a message on my phone from my son telling me to come home because Stinky was much worse. I left Bishop about 10 pm Saturday and had Stinky at the local animal hospital near Redlands at 3:30 am on Sunday. Stinky is never coming home from the hospital - his body was shutting down. I'm going to miss my Stinky.

With the shorter fall days, Mount Conness was a nice hike because it's only about 7 miles round-trip with 3200 feet gain. The route we took was pretty much Class 1/Class 2 with maybe a couple of easy Class 3 moves. It took me about 4 hours to get up the mountain and between 2 and 2.5 hours to get back to the trailhead from the summit.
