Vivian Creek Trail 4.4.09 : A day hike up the Vivian Creek Trail to Red Bump at 10,600' - a 12+ miles round-trip with about 4700' elevation gain. It was a great day, but when I first started out a group of hikers caught up to me near right after Mill Creek and they were right on my heels; so I stepped off the trail and let them pass. They stopped for a break as soon as they passed me. They did this 3 times before Vivian Creek Camp - got right on my heels, so I stopped and stepped off the trail each time to let them pass and as soon as they would pass they would stop for a break. Why couldn't they take their break before I had to stop and let them pass?

About 2.5 hours up (this group can move), almost an hour on top, and then 2.5 hours back down, so a 6 hour day. Today was my first day with my new point and shoot camera - it's a Panasonic Lumix DCM-LX3 and so far I'm pleased with it. This camera is so much better than the Sony DSC-170 I was using when I wanted a lite camera. I'll still like the Olympus E-410 better, but it's just not portable enough to take on a lot of my hikes/climbs.

Carrizo Plain - Caliente Mountain 3.21.09 : On Friday Eliza and I drove to Carrizo Plain National Monument. We drove in from Hwy 58 and Seven Mile Road and then we took Soda Lake Road almost all the way down to Hwy 166. We stopped tons of times to take pictures of the flowers before heading back to Shelby Campground. The campground was full, so we drove up to the parking area for the hike to Caliente Mountain and camped up there in the big pullout. There was a great view from where we camped and we were lucky because the wind was quiet all night. On Saturday morning Cassy and Robb met up up there for the hike to Caliente Mountain. It was a long 17.4 mile hike (per my GPS) along a rolling ridge (my gps said 2900' gain but Robb's said 2600' gain). The weather was perfect, the views were nice, and there were some pretty flowers along the ridge. The wind had picked up by the time we got back to the parking area and a storm was coming; so we headed home instead of spending the night out in the wind. A nice weekend.

Just a map for this album because I forgot the memory card for my camera. Allen Peak (5795') - Yucaipa Ridge 12.12.08 : A day hike to Allen Peak along the Yucaipa Ridge. I didn't start hiking until 10 am because I wandered along Mill Creek near Thurman Flats for a while (first 5 pictures are from that area), so the day was too short to do both Allen and Birch as I had wanted to. It was beautiful up there, so I don't mind heading back to do Birch and the other peaks along the Ridge. 11 mile round-trip with 3300' elevation gain - I was out there 5.5 hours. I am so lucky to live so close to such beauty in such an urban/suburban area - it is such a shame to see the development that is encroaching on these beautiful areas. Are our ticky-tack suburban houses with green lawns or those big estate houses in the hills really worth it all? Why can't people live closer together in multi-family housing?

Kevin, Manju, and I hiked up from the museum in Palm Spring to Long Valley. We took a good break at the ranger station in Long Valley where the temperature was brisk. When we started out out toward the Peak I was moving slowly and didn't feel up to the peak. I told the guys to go on without me because they would be able to make good time to the peak and get there and back to the tram station before it got too cold. I kept going slowly and went out to Round Valley and then I checked out Lily Camp and went on to Wellman's Divide. I love the view from Wellman's Divide. I had about a 17 mile day with 9900' gain and the guys had a 22 mile day with 11000' gain. The temperature was beautiful along the Skyline Tail to Long Valley, but it was chilly after that with the temperature at Long Valley in the 30's and it got colder as we went higher. I think it was in the 20's at Wellman's Divide and probably colder at the summit.

Cactus to Clouds 5.12.07 : A day hike from Palm Springs to the summit of Mount San Jacinto. 22 miles everyone says and the Topo software has it at 10,926 feet gain. The gain is done on the way to the summit and that is about 15.5 miles, so the gain per mile isn't too bad - about 700 feet per mile with a mix of steep sections and gentle sections and even a little downhill. The hike back to the tram station is only 5.5 miles and downhill.

Skyline Trail 5.5.07 : Another day hike up the Skyline Trail. Started at Palm Springs Museum at 4:30 am and reached Long Valley a few minutes before 11:30 am, so just about 7 hours. Approximately 10 miles and 8500 feet gain. Maybe next time I'll go all the way to the summit of San Jacinto. Once I made it to Round Valley and 3 times I've made it to Long Valley.

Skyline (C2C) trail to Round Valley 3/17/07 : A day hike with Cy and Pam along the Skyline Trail. I headed out to check out on my own to Round Valley once we got up to Long Valley, but I didn't do the trek all the way to the summit of San Jacinto, so my hike was from the Cactus to 1800 feet below the Clouds. Total Hike was about 14 miles with 9100 feet elevation gain. The section from Palm Springs to Long Valley is about 10.5 miles and 8400 feet elevation gain. The section from Long Valley to Round Valley and back is about 3.5 miles and 700 feet elevation gain.
