Mount Sneffels (14150') 8.12.08 : A day hike from the restroom at 11,200+, through Yankee Boy Basin, up Lavender Col, and then up the chute and through the V-notch (the standard route). A little over 6 miles round-trip with about 3000' elevation gain. This is a truly beautiful area - I highly recommend the climb.

Grays Peak (14270') and Torreys Peak (14267'), Colorado 9/1/07 : A day hike to Grays and Torrey's Peak starting at Stevens Gulch Trailhead. About 9 miles round-trip with 3700' elevation gain - it took 6 hours starting in the dark at 4:15 am and was back at the trailhead at 10:15 am. The hardest part of this hike is the bumpy drive to the trailhead - don't head up that road without high clearance. You don't need 4wd, but a low-slung vehicle would struggle.

Great Sand Dunes National Park - 8/28/07 : I went to check out the tallest sand dunes in the USA at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. I climbed out to "High" Dune in the early morning. High Dune is the prominent dune visible from the Visitor Center. high Dune rises 650 feet from the base. There are no trails to the summit; I just begin at the base and zigzaged up and down the dune ridge lines. From High Dune the views are great and you can see Star Dune to the southwest (about 1.5 miles away), which rises 750 feet. Star dunes have three or more arms and are created by complex wind patterns. The hike to High Dune is an up and down hike of 3 miles round-trip - and hiking on the sand is tough.
